What is volumetric weight?

Volumetric weight (also called dimensional or DIM weight) converts a package’s physical size into an equivalent weight so carriers can price low-density shipments fairly. Carriers charge by whichever is greater: the actual (scale) weight or the volumetric weight. Wikipedia

Standard formula

To calculate volumetric weight in metric units (cm → kg) use the formula:

Volumetric weight (kg) = (Length × Width × Height in cm) ÷ Volumetric divisor

Common divisors used by carriers:

  • 6000 cm³/kg — widely used for air freight and many freight carriers. volumetricweightcalculator.com+1
  • 5000 cm³/kg — used by some express couriers (DHL, certain parcel services).

In imperial units (inches → pounds) similar divisors exist (for example 139 in³/lb or 166 in³/lb) depending on carrier and service. dhlexpress.ee+1

Quick example

A parcel measures 60 × 40 × 40 cm and actual weight is 15 kg.
Volumetric weight = (60 × 40 × 40) ÷ 6000 = 96000 ÷ 6000 = 16 kg.
Chargeable weight = max(15 kg actual, 16 kg volumetric) = 16 kg. WareIQ

Practical tips

  • Always check the specific divisor for the carrier and service you’ll use — airlines, couriers, and road freight may each use a different divisor. DHL+1
  • Measure the outermost dimensions (including packaging). Carriers often round dimensions according to their rules before applying the divisor.
  • For bulky low-density items, volumetric weight often determines the bill — pack efficiently to reduce billed weight.

Final note

Volumetric weight rules and divisors vary by carrier and region. Always confirm the carrier’s current policy when preparing shipments to avoid surprises at billing time.
